Silvana studied at Huddersfield University

Silvana Trevale is a photographer who from a young age has always been interested in photographing people as she mentioned by saying that when she was in school she took her camera in and photographed her friends, she is originally from Venezuela but came to the U.K. in 2013 to study her BA at the University of Huddersfield with an idea of wanting to work with people and fashion.

During her final year, Silvana used her final project to mix what she had learned in the second year with fashion, using conceptual art to explore alternative fashion and create shoots that wouldn’t be as glamorous as normal fashion shoots. While in third year, she was introduced to film and decided to work with it to take a risk also taking a documentary path. During the winter break she went back to Venezuela and walked around photographing everything around her, once she developed the film and spoke to her lecturers Silvana came to realise that she had taken images which were celebrating the women of Venezuela with the current events going in the country. This project is called Nosotras and helped kick start her career as it won the Bronze Medal for Best Portfolio Award, OffSpring Photomeet in 2017.

Silvana has won three awards during her time as a freelance photographer which was the Joan Wakelin Bursary 2018, APHE Bursary Award, 2017 and Bronze Medal for Best Portfolio Award at OffSpring Photomeet 2017. She is continuing to work with intraffque creating documentary style fashion photography and continues to study at the University of Arts, London studying an MA in Fashion Image.

During her talk, Silvana explained what life was like in her home country of Venezuela, which was interesting to her especially with how different it is from England, it seems like a different world. Silavna always takes pride in creating personal projects such as Venezuelen Youth which focuses on the children of her home country and it is powerful yet silent. Her work inspires me in the way she captures emotion not only through the models faces but also the narrative that she shows using the surrounds that she has access to.
